Workplace Motivation
What motivates a person to go to work? There is a number of different things that can motivate a person to go to work. A positive atmosphere is one. Workplace motivation is the key to a successful, happy, comfortable working environment.(Murphy, 2006, para. 1) Working at Manteca Mini Storage a person needed intrinsic motivation.
Working at Manteca Mini Storage had its ups and downs. There is only three positions: On-site manager, assistant manager and maintenance. The on-site manager believed in a positive work environment. The owner didn’t like to pay for much. He considered employees as a cost not an asset. There wasn’t any rewards, or positive feedback from the owner. The manager would give recognition when the time came. When a project was finished she would usually pay for lunch out of her pocket and she always praised the employee for the job.
The roof had started to leak during a bad storm and the storage units needed to be covered. The manager called the owner and explained that this was happening and that she needed to call the maintenance person in to help cover the storage units. The owner told her that he was not paying for any overtime. So the manager bought dinner and paid the employee to come in and help her cover the storage units.
The owner should have implemented the goal setting theory. By settings goals employees are motivated to perform better and put in maximum effort. Goal orientation helps employees avoid misunderstandings in a job. If there would have been goals then maybe the storage units possible would have already been covered before the storm.
Another way the owner could have motivated the employees is through the expectancy theory. If the owner would have given a goal to work towards such as employee benefits, there is a possibility that the employees and the manager would have performed at their best.
