Muscle Vs Tuner

Muscle & Tuner
The battle between roaring American engines and whining foreign tuners has been the topic of debate for decades.   Foreign tuners are cars that have imported into America; they are more known as “Import Tuners.”   The vast majority of these cars consist of four cylinder engines and five-six speed manual transmissions. American muscle cars were referred to as “hotrods,” known for their powerful engines designed for high-performance driving.   Many manufacturers of imports are from Japan; Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi are the most notorious brands that extort their tuner models.   As far as muscle cars; Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and General Motors are the head honchos of manufacturers in the United States.   Muscle cars are well known for running RWD, or rear wheel drive, having four speed manual transmissions, and both are distinct for being two door coupes or convertibles.   Two different varieties of engines, and styles of customizations, are based on how effective they win races.
The import scene will never be the same again after Honda slipped in a massaged motor and named the sub model, the SI.   The SI had a “VTEC” engine; VTEC stood for: Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control.   The VTEC system is a simple method of endowing the engine with multiple camshaft profiles optimized for low and high RPM operations.   For example, the Honda Civic SI has three cam lobes per cylinder, with the added benefit of roller rockers and continuous variable intake cam timing, these performance motors max out at around 200 hp.   Big block engines from America for example, the first generation Pontiac 455 Super Duty had a 455 block V8 engine rated at 310 bhp.   Although American big block engines weren’t modified to have VTEC control, their speed would surpass any other.   "It is a product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodders’ philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it.” – Peter Henshaw
