It also just so happens that the pieces from the two composers I am familiar with and actually like will be performed in conjunction with a dance routine by a ballet company by the name of Complexions. The fact that there was a ballet included made me even the more eager for the performance to start. As the lights dim and the conductor and orchestra are being introduced to the audience silence falls over the entire arena. At this point all apprehensions I had before is gone and I look forward to an entertaining show.
With just one stroke of the arm and a combined nod of the head the music began as a playful energy exuded throughout the Howard Gilman Opera House.   The opening piece, The Comedians by Kabalevsky begins in minor chords in duple meter.   The xylophone seems to play a very important role, which I am even more interesting because most pieces I am used to listening always are always played for accentuation. For the first movement it seems like there is a certain arrangement for the xylophone. The xylophones are introduced by the snare drums and have a solo while the string instruments are plucked and supply the down beat.   The tempo is steady but when the chords change to major the tempo slows at down, while the meter remains a constant
I would describe the language of this piece to be a mix between allegro and grave when the chords changed. Only for sections at a time where is movements melodic, this was done by the violins only and some ornamentation was used. The xylophone always took the audience back to the theme.
