Depiction of Jesus
Jesus Christ is depicted throughout the New Testament in various renditions. Because there were various authors within the New Testament diverse depictions of Jesus Christ are to be expected. Different authors such as Mark, Matthew, and Luke seem to have similar portrayals of Jesus however there are, now and then, subtle differences in the depiction of Jesus Christ himself. Or could it just be the style and the way the books were composed that made Jesus vary from book to book? My argument is that Jesus is Jesus and will always be Jesus. I believe that Jesus’ depictions seem to differ within these three books, because of what these authors chose to depict of Jesus Christ, and not because he in fact was seen differently in the eyes of these three authors. Although these books are very similar to one another I will try and distinguish the subtle differences in the depiction Jesus within these three books.
First of all within the book of Mark the birth and genealogy of Jesus are not mentioned, nor is the resurrection, whereas in the books of Matthew and Luke both the birth and resurrection of Jesus are written. Throughout the scripture verses we read for class, it seemed to me as if the chapters we read were different for each book. For example in Mark, Jesus was described mostly as a healer and servant to the people. The chapters we read were mostly about Jesus’ healings and teachings. They were stories about how Jesus went from town to town performing miracles and “teaching with authority!” (Mark 1:27). The one oddity in this book compared with the other books was that the people in Mark were amazed with this new style of teaching by this so called son of God. They claimed, “He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” (Mark 1:27). The chapter goes on to tell more stories of Jesus’ miraculous power to cure the ill.
Within the chapters we read for Matthew, Jesus’ stories of healings aren’t mentioned as much....
