Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov experiences a change for the better
“The Lady with the Pet Dog,” a short story written by Anton Chekhov in 1899, conveys a story of two adulterous lovers who meet and fall in love while on vacation in Yalta. The lady with the pet dog is Anna Sergeyevna, a young woman of 22. Dmitri Gurov is a married man of just under 40. They meet in the public gardens and in the square several times a day. When Anna returns home to S______, Gurov expects he will forget about her and the time they spent together, but instead he is faced with an inner conflict between his beliefs and his feelings. Many people would argue that the character Chekhov has illustrated is incapable of love; that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Contrary to those beliefs, Gurov learns from his time with Anna and overcomes his defensive chauvinism and shallow mind and replaces it with a mature understanding of love.
Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov is described as a man who is unhappily married to an “unintelligent, narrow, inelegant” wife. He is a chauvinist who views women as “the lower race,” yet he cannot “get on for two days” without them. When Gurov meets Anna, we begin to see a struggle between what he believes is right (women are “the lower race”) and the mysterious feelings of “love.” Gurov finds himself thinking about her in his room at the hotel. He expects that the encounter will be yet another “bitter experience” and tries to dismiss the possibility of feeling anything other by thinking “There’s something pathetic about her, anyway.” He is confused about his thoughts and remains firm in his opinion of “the lower race.”
Gurov’s character begins to transform after spending a week with Anna. While his former lovers have been “easy conquests,” Gurov has does not immediately seduce Anna.
