Bretton Conference:
Name by which became known the Monetary and Financial Conference of the United Nations, which took place between 1 and July 22, 1944, at Bretton Woods (New Hampshire, USA). The conference, which brought together representatives from 44 countries, was convened to try to achieve stability of the monetary and credit units to a new economic order after the end of World War II. The conference came the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), with the goal of providing credits short and long term on a global scale. The Conference also emerged a new international monetary system that had to achieve stability in the exchange rates between various currencies. This system achieved monetary stability until it collapsed under speculative pressures that followed the crisis of oil prices in 1973.
Creating IBRD
The IBRD started its financial operations on June 25, 1946, and approved its first loan on May 9, 1947 (US $ 250 million to France for post-war reconstruction, in real terms, is the largest loan approved by the bank until date).
This organization was established primarily as a mechanism for the reconstruction of Europe and Japan after the Second World War, with an additional mandate to promote economic growth in the developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. At first, the bank focused primarily on infrastructure projects long-term construction of roads, airports and power plants. As Japan and its client Europeans "graduated" (acquire certain levels of income per capita), the IBRD focused entirely on developing countries. Since the beginning of the 90's, has also provided funding to post-socialist states of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
