The atmosphere of the St. Bernard’s versus Concordia Academy (CA) high school boys’ basketball game was highly intense. The two were rival schools and were both there that night to prove their school’s team was the most superior of all. St. Bernard’s had just gotten a new front entrance with big glass windows. As I walked up I could clearly see the long line for admittance and was not looking forward to waiting. Finally getting through the line, I continued to the doors of “the world’s smallest and most orange-lit gym ever.†As I walked through the doors, the sight of green and white was everywhere, along with the orange tint! Although we were playing at St. Bernard’s school where the colors were blue and gold, it seemed as if all of CA was in attendance. The CA team members were in their nice warm-ups, looking excited, even some a little scared. They had prepared for this moment, yet, somehow they looked a lot more energized then they had during school that morning. Glancing around I noticed even our teachers were there to support the team. I continued through the gym, to the left side, where the teams’ bench was. Making my way through what seemed like a thousand students, I finally reach the bench. The intensity was rising with every second on the warm-up clock ticking down. You couldn’t think of anything in that gym, the crowd was hyped for a game that only gets battled out twice a year, three if we were good enough. Then all at once, as if someone had muted a TV, the crowd went silent. Looking around, I noticed the warm-up clock had finished, the game was on! If you weren’t feeling the thrill and a little jittery before, you would be feeling it after that buzzer went off.
It was for the glory, the fame, and the name that our team needed this win. Sure they had only lost four games in the season so far, which is better than most can say, but somehow it was very important to beat St. Bernard’s that night. Sixteen minutes on the clock,...
