Opposites Attract
Talking cows, ivy covered cities, and flying dreadlocked virgins, when reading the book Lullaby we see through infrequent flash-forwards and the climactic ending, that the world has become a very strange place. It is very easy to look at what transpires and see it as though everything ended up the way it did through random events. But hidden in the background was actually an evolving scheme thought up by the two most devious characters to grace a novel in a long time. By using amazingly contrasting methods both Mona and Oyster manage to manipulate every other character appearing in the novel, from beginning to end. All in an attempt to achieve their ultimate goal of acquiring the Grimore and meticulously shaping the planet and the people on it as they see fit.
When we meet Oyster and Mona they are not maniacs crazed on world domination. The road from young lovers to madmen is a long one paved with beliefs of how the world should be and thoughts of the powerful culling song. The idea most likely came out of Oysters lifestyle. He saw everything differently. He feels he can understand the pain of all living things better than they themselves can understand it. Because of all this he feels there is no one in the world who could make better decisions for the planet as a whole than him.
This idea of ruling the world, having the authority to decide what is truly right and wrong, began as a mere daydream for the both of them, but started to become all too real
as the Culling song found its way into their lives. Now things started to take shape, the
power they needed to rule the world could actually be within their grasp. Once they knew the Grimore existed, let alone was in their possession, they merely had to relax and wait for Helen to finish translating the book and think of a plan to get everything, the culling song, the Grimore, the World. What Oyster always calls “the ultimate power grab.â€
