CHARACTERISTICS OF ORIENTALISM, PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION
The difference between Muslims and Arabs is Muslims are a religious group of Islam and Arabs are an ethnic group.   Most Americans just lump them together into one negative stereotype group.
In the past two years, the United States has tried to improve the relationship with the Muslims and Arabs.   President Obama did an interview which was televised on Arab television stations trying to focus on change of United States foreign policy. Despite the United States efforts, most of the laws or changes implemented after 9/11 still exist.   Airport security is still one of the most visible efforts put in place by Homeland Security.   Homeland security is always upgrading or creating new resources for a more thorough use of this resource. The other change still in place is the Patriot Act. President Bush put this bill into law after 9/11 which allows scrutinizing of not only Muslims and Arabs, but also for all individuals conducting business in the United States.
There are numerous characteristics of Orientalism, involving the Muslims and Arabs.   One of the main ones I see is their religion.   Even though Islam is a very biblical-based religion, it still causes us to question the actual belief.   The rituals involved in being a Muslim are very black and white.   Another characteristic would be dress requirements of Muslims for the women.   The women are to be covered with no signs of body shape or form and the only part of a woman’s body that can be unexposed is their hands and feet.   Most orientalism can result in some type of hate crime. Most Americans do not understand the differences between the two groups therefore, they are afraid of what and who they represent. We usually react in a negative way when we are afraid of the unknown.
