Adolescence is the time when youth learn their body, they gain knowledge about self concept, and self esteem, psychological and self management strategies (Nollen, 2006). Body image is the mental representation that is seen, when adolescents look at themselves (Walker, 2009). There are two types of body image. The first one is seen when adolescents look at themselves, and the second is the one that they wished they had. There are two main factors in determining body image; biological, which are body mass and personality, and subculture which come from parents and peers (Walker, 2009). When children tease other children about the way they look or their weight it usually causes negativity on how they view at themselves. Adolescents self image can also be affected by things such as morals, religion, and gender.
When children grow up their minds and bodies are still growing as one. As adolescents experience certain events it helps them to separate their bodies from their mind (Walker, 2009).The way adolescents view their bodies take shape from pass experiences as well as currents events(Walker, 2009). The changes that adolescents go through during puberty shape their body images the most (Walker, 2009). The way adolescent’s view their bodies can be changed by things such as illness and injuries.

Body dissatisfaction and weight watching is one of the top body issues among adolescents. Body dissatisfaction is a term used when one doesn’t like their body image. 53% of girls and 28% of boys reported dissatisfaction with their bodies. Dissatisfaction with appearance appeared in 40% of girls and 18% of boys (Christine Knauss, 2008). Common cause of body dissatisfaction is because of media pressure (Christine Knauss, 2008). The media show people bodies at standards that are abnormal and unattainable to most people. The models that they put on television are either ultrathin, or super buffed.
