One of my biggest health worries due to it is a big factor on both sides of my family is diabetes. My father, grandmother (father’s mother) my Aunt (mother’s sister) and grandfather (mother’s father) all have diabetes. I am very self conscious as to what I eat and put into my body. A few of my nutritional goals are to make sure that daily I exercise for at least 30-60 minutes. Also I am making sure that we have each one of the recommended food groups in our meals. But it is recommended for my age, height and weight to have 3 ounces of whole grains, 3 cups of dark green vegetables weekly, 2 cups of orange vegetables, 3 cups of dried beans and peas, 3 cups of starchy vegetables, and 6 ½ cups of all other vegetables. Also one of my goals is to aim for to consume six teaspoons of oil a day. It is also important that I have 2 cups of fruit, 3 cups of milk and 5.5 ounces of meat and beans.
On both sides of my family there is moderate and severe diabetes. In February of this year my father was a border line diabetic, he had gone one day to have an MRI of his neck due to pain he was having and by mistake they found a tumor wrapped around his brain stem, it was not cancerous but it was cutting the oxygen off to his brain and was causing hearing loss and vision problems. He had the tumor removed and has since become a full blown diabetic and is now insulin dependent. He also eats right and does get exercise but before my father found out he had this tumor he was a drinker, he thought that since he was drinking vodka and diet it was ok with having diabetes. This is a common misconception that if the liquor is clear then it is ok for a diabetic to drink it. I explained to him several times that all liquor contains a great amount of sugar and is not good for a diabetic. He now no longer drinks, due to the fact that after having the brain tumor removed he often gets severe headaches. There are a few forms of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational....
