We all have our own style; it’s different, special, and more importantly: unique. From hair to height, from thoughts to feelings, handwriting gives us the opportunity to express ourselves in our own individual way. Many of us do not take into consideration what our handwriting says about us. It is not a skill which is given much thought, especially with the advent of technology in our daily lives. Good penmanship is essential to effective communication, creativity, and freedom of expression, and is a skill we should all strive to achieve.
Words, thoughts, and ideas can get lost in translation without proper, or legible, handwriting. What specifically could be necessity for good handwriting? High school students who take the SAT are now required to complete an essay portion. If a student’s handwriting isn’t legible, their score may suffer. By having good handwriting and formation of letters, the student can focus on thoughts and words. This leads to attention to detail, improved concentration skills, and increased creativity. Many instructors have their students keep a journal for when they feel overwhelmed, or stressed, or just plain want to journal their life. And sometimes the instructors will ask to read the journals. This not only calls for accountability with the assignment, but accountability within one’s life. When a student turns in a written essay or research paper, if it is illegible and sloppy then it takes the teacher that much longer to grade it because they have to decipher what was written. This can lead to lower grades from the instructor and an overall lower grade in the course. Fluent handwriting is a key to learning and communicating well with colleagues, friends, and family, and of major importance to learning.
Teachers don’t always get a say in how much time they can spend teaching students about good penmanship. Some school curriculums...
