Pit Bulls: The Fall Guy for Canine Aggression

In today’s society when dog attack is heard, the initial thought is Pit Bull. In the news you never hear about the attacks by other breeds of dogs, moreover, most people cannot even identify a Pit Bull, a lot of the time it is assumption. Whereas others who are very educated with this particular breed feel differently. Even though dog attacks are committed by Pit Bulls, not all Pit Bulls are vicious animals. Pit Bulls have the determination to work hard and please their master, not to mention they are one of the smartest canine breeds. With the proper training and a responsible owner, these are one of the loyalist dogs to own.Â

Originally the Pit Bull was bred from different bull dogs as well as terriers, to fight or for bull baiting. The ancestors of this breed were brought to America by Irish immigrants in the mid 1800's. The term "Pit Bull" is the shortened form of the name American Pit Bull Terrier, the name by which the breed is registered with the United Kennel Club and American Dog Breeders Association. The breeding of Pit Bulls for fighting came to a halt in 1930, being that England put a ban on Bull baiting. The Pit Bull was also used as a farm dog; in England they have been called “The Nanny Dog†or “The Children’s Nursemaidâ€, because of their nurturing demeanor towards children.
Throughout history in the United States, the Pit Bull has been part of advertising campaigns from “RCA†to “Buster Brownâ€; let’s not forget one the most famous Pit Bulls of all time “Petey†from the television show “The Little Rascalsâ€. The Pit Bull is the only canine breed to feature on the cover of LIFE magazine, three times.
