In 2009 there were 289,328 breast augmentations done in the United States (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2011). That’s an interesting quote at the onset. Breast augmentation, also known as Augmentation Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to increase breast size and/or volume (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2011). This is done with a plastic surgeon placing either silicone, or saline-filled implants under the existing breast tissue. This should not be confused with reconstructive breast surgery. Cosmetic surgery is done to enhance or change the body’s natural appearance. Reconstructive surgery is done to correct either a natural deformity, one cause by trauma, or removal of the breast because of illness or disease. The possibilities for cosmetic enhancements are endless because of the variety of shapes, fill sizes, and textures. Different types of implant material, incision locations, and implant placement has made Breast Augmentation one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures among woman.
The first step in the augmentation process is to locate and research a bored certified plastic surgeon. Many surgeons who perform augmentations are not certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. By law any Doctor with a Medical Degree can perform the surgery, but without specialization in the cosmetic surgery field results may not be satisfactory. Look at all the resources available, look at the doctor’s websites, before and after pictures, and any testimonials available.
