Assignment 2 – Question 1
On July 4th, 1776 the Second Continental Congress officially decided to declare independence from the Royal Crown of Britain. This was formally accomplished through the document written by Thomas Jefferson that we now know as The Declaration of Independence. Ultimately, the declaration was the result of extreme tensions between the British Crown and the American Colonists. The colonists felt severely abused and over-taxed by the British tyrants and strongly opposed the idea of taxation without representation. The British instated the Stamp Act and expensive duties to greaten their overseas revenues. As a result, the colonists initiated an effective mass boycott of British goods and eventually their angst was displayed during The Boston Tea Party. Boston was again the center of events when British soldiers fired on unarmed antagonizing Bostonians in what would later be known as The Boston Massacre. All of these events contributed to the complete deterioration of British-American relations and the necessity for America’s absolute separation and independence.
The Declaration of Independence succeeded admirably at achieving its three significant main intentions. The first and most obvious intention was to present the former colonies as a new and sovereign nation free of outside rule. The second intention was to establish an acknowledgement of humanity’s natural rights, which are the rights to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.â€All three of these were rights that the colonists strongly felt were being infringed upon by the unfairness of the British rule. Lastly, the Americans compiled a list of all the “Injuries and Usurpations†committed by King George III as an enormous personal insult.
The American Declaration of Independence stands today as one of the most powerful and righteous documents ever transcribed. Jefferson’s words will continue to empower and to strike awe in Americans for years to come…
