Pope John XXIII was born Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli on the 25th November 1881. He was born into a poor family of farmers in a small town in Sotto il Monte, Italy. He encountered a very religious, yet humble upbringing, which provided the basis of his values, which contributed to a great impact upon Christianity. In 1901, he was appointed as minor church roles such as priest in his hometown. He was ordained Bishop in 1925 and it was at this time he travelled through Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and France. Upon returning to Rome in 1953, he was made Archbishop and on October 28, 1958, was elected as Pope. It was through his experienced as various religious positions throughout many parts of the world that Pope John XXIII gained the knowledge and understanding of the human kind in order to make a great impact upon Christianity.

Although Pope John XXIII lasted only a 5-year pontificate before his death, he held a great impact upon Christianity and continues to contribute to the development and growth of Christianity today.

After various meetings with Cardinals and Bishops, Pope John XXIII introduced the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) that aimed to reform and renew the current Catholic church of its traditions and rituals, which had been maintained since medieval times. He saw Vatican II as a way of bringing the current state of Christianity more up-to-date, creating a more appealing and appropriate environment for Christian adherents in modern times. This change was welcomed by all throughout the Christian Church and it now forms the Catholic Church within today’s society, portraying the image of the Catholic Church as a much more accepting, open and friendly environment with more to offer. The introduction of Vatican II has made a significant impact of the renewal of the Christian Church, particularly throughout Catholicism.
