Superstition known to be a notion or believe that is not based on true facts.
For my oral presentation I have chosen to discus superstition, mainly because there are some characters in the play ‘Blood Brothers’ that portray it at its best.
Mrs. Johnstone is very superstitious. I believe that this is because of lack of education that she has.
Mrs. Johnstone, who is in the working class has certain believes like putting shoes on the table; this is a quote from the text that gives an obvious side of her with her superstition. “Oh God, Mrs. Lyons, never put new shoes on a table…You never know what’ll happen” (page 7). This is what Mrs. Johnstone says to Mrs. Lyons as she places the new shoes on the table. We see that it is mostly displayed by people that consider ‘luck’. This would be believable because Mrs. Johnstone has quite a life, with her husband leaving her with hand full children. This would make her think that she has had bad luck in the past which is one of the causes of superstition. With her being superstitious this gives the reader the perception that she has a lot of awareness towards things, that other people like Mrs. Lyons do not even regard as important.
Another quote that we can get from the play by Mrs. Johnstone is from page 33, “Ever! Now go on. Beat it, go home before the bogey man gets y’”. This is one of the things that show how superstitious she is, her intention was to frighten the child by mentioning the bogey man. Mrs. Lyons explains to Edward that bogey man is just a superstition use to terrify little children.   This is yet another illustration of Mrs. Johnstone’s behavior towards superstition.
Superstition is not only portrayed by Mrs. Johnstone in the play of ‘Blood Brothers’, the narrator also plays a role in illustrating it. The narrator sings a song on page 75 entitled ‘the devil’s got your number’. This is just to show that every debt that has been made has got to be paid. However this may not...
