Prison staff and their functions

Staff functions
The warden is essentially the C.E.O. of the prison; she/he will attend to the vital duties of security, budget, programs, personnel, and inmate management. (Carlson & Garrett, (2008, pg. 554). The associate wardens oversee the functions and operations of programs and operations. The associate warden that oversees the programs will deal with the areas of: correctional services, religious services, education and recreation, mental health, records office receiving and discharge, mailroom, case management coordinator, correctional services, and the unit managers. The operations associate warden will oversee the human resources, food service, safety management, health services, facilities maintenance and construction, industry programs, financial management, and staff training. (Carlson & Garrett, (2008, pg. 198).
The Chief of Security administers all direct security personnel; including shift supervisors. Shift Supervisors manages their staff during their appointed shift and to ensure there is adequate security staff during their shift. Lieutenants assist the shift supervisors in their duties such as: maintenance logs and administrative reports. They also ensure the security and operations of their staff. The Seniors/Sergeants are the “supervisory security staff who provide first-level oversight of non-unit correctional officers and who may be assigned to special security posts or operations” as ascertained by Corrections Corporation of America. (CCA), (n.d.). Non-unit officers are the correctional officers that perform routine checks on inmates, observe inmates during meals, recreation, work assignments, and within their housing units. (CCA, n.d).
