Obesity results when body fat accumulates over time which causes a chronic energy imbalance. Chronic energy imbalance is when calories consumed exceed calories expended. Obesity is a major health hazard around the world and is associated with common diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and some cancers.
In recent decades, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in populations whose environments offer a large amount of calorie-rich foods and few opportunities for physical activity. Changes in the genetic makeup of populations occur too slowly to be responsible for the rapid rise in obesity, genes to play a role in the development of obesity.
