Race and My Community

“The construction of the railroad became the impetus to the creation of a new community by several founders including General William Moore and Pierce Anderson. They gave the new town the name Tullahoma and it was chartered in 1852. The town grew steadily and the nearby springs became the focal points of several health resortsâ€. (Tullahoma Chamber of Commerce, 2007 p 1). Tullahoma is the home of Arnold Engineering Development Center and is a major hub for aviation and development and military missiles produced at the Air Force Base here.
The members of my community belong to different ethnic groups. I was born and raised in Tullahoma Tennessee. Tullahoma is located “65 miles from 3 major metropolitan areas of Nashville, Chattanooga and Huntsville, Alabamaâ€. (Tullahoma Chamber of Commerce, 2007 p 1). The United States Census Bureau (2009) website estimated, “the population of Tullahoma Tennessee to be 18,533.â€
“The European Americans make up 89.7% of the population, African Americans make up of 6.8% of the population, American Indian and Alaska Native account for 0.3%, Asians/Pacific Islanders 1.1%, and Hispanic/Latino account for 1.7% of the population in my communityâ€. (United States Census Bureau, 2009 p 1). Members of my community vary in their looks. Even though the 6.8% of the population belongs to the same ethnic group as me, they do not look like me. We are an ethnic group with many different shades of color and distinctive traits.
The members within my community treat all people the same regardless of their different ethnic background. We have a very tight community that comes together to help anyone. When I was about seven or eight, I remember the Ku Klux Klan planned a march from what is known as the “black-side†of town to the Tullahoma City Hall.
