Introduction:
In my community there is a great variety of different races. If I stand outside you can hear plenty of different types of music, see people of different colors walk and drive down the street. I have lived in different parts of this city so I am aware of the different sides my city has to offer.
I live in Hesperia, California. There are approximately 79,000 people in this community so it is not exactly a huge town. I am a part of the many families affected by the budget crisis in the United States. On the other side of town where we owned our house there was virtually no crime, you never heard gunshots or helicopters. Vary rare would you see a police car, unless there was some type of car accident or a fire. I can say that it is a honestly a different story on the side of town I live in now, the funny part about that is that I am about five minutes away from my old house. I can admit that where we originally lived there was very few Latinos, African Americans or any other people of color. Could that be the reason for the lower crime rate?
I asked a Sergeant Daniel J. Thompson of the Hesperia Police department why there is a huge difference. He stated that in the area I lived before was considered a middle class area. It had a one hour walk to the main street through hills; most people with lower incomes will be closer to the main street. In this town it seems location is everything. I guess in a way I can agree. In the part of town where I lived before it was rare that you see a vacant house, or a house up for auction. Where I live now there are five houses that surround my home that have been vacant for more then a year. You can see there is a lot of young people on the streets with basically no where to go. What can the community do to make a difference? I have seen that there are plenty of centers for young boys and girls to go to improve their skills, but when you go inside they are practically empty.
