Racism is unavoidable when in a multicultural area. Racism is fuelled by the numerous people who hate and it continues to grow. Crimes play a major role in both the fight and fuelling of racism. From those committing the crime to those who decide to look the other way when there is injustice, crime is what gives people reason to continue hating. It prevents people from seeing a person for what they’re worth and who they are. Racism gives way for more hate within a community and thus divides the people amongst one another. “I have known all my life that racism is a lot more than name calling on the playground. It is a way of life, of thinking, a complete worldview that entraps both the believer and his victim, and it has its own moral, social, religious, and scientific imperatives (p. 200).†Racism is not the belief of just one individual, but it is a community that creates this much hate.
Racism is well shown in the short story Encounters with the Other which is a story that follows a young black man named Clive and certain unfortunate events within the city of Toronto. The Other that the author keeps referring to is the black immigrants who came to Toronto from their country. The story starts off with Clive watching people mourn over police officer Todd Baylis who died in the line of duty. “They didn’t know my name and they wanted me dead, like that policeman. He was one of them and they wanted me to die in his place(p.196).†It was obvious to Clive that these people saw him for his color and it is the same color they associate their problems with. “.... people looked over their shoulder at him, turned to their neighbours and nodded in his direction.(p. 196)†People would take glances at him, they were uneasy with him around. The man who killed Baylis was black and Clive was black, to them at the time there was no real difference. Clinton Gayle was the name of the convicted killer and he was always in trouble with the law ever...
