As a freshman taking English 104, I have learned to appreciate the moments that my instructor takes time to explain the prompts on each essay assignments or when we have class discussions on the readings from the textbook. The class discussion brings various insights to the author’s work and it is fascinating to point out messages the author may not have realized she/he included in the piece. By reading multiple stories by different author, I have noticed that each author have unusual style of writing. So far in English 104, we have been asked to write three different essays; in-class, objective summary, and critique essays in which each essay was approached differently.
Writing had always been one of my weaknesses, but it was always challenging to take initial step past the introduction paragraph that grabs the reader’s attention. Looking back to my first essay, my writing has become increasingly more concise, though I still struggle in each essay. My weakest link was writing the in-class essay. I know that the class received the prompt for this particular essay few days ahead, but I did not take the opportunity to come up with an idea or topic on my writing. I started off with a well developed attention getter, but slack off in the rest of the essay. “However, the rest of just seems to be generations about a country without a details, explanation, or descriptions of a community and place”.   After reading my instructor’s comment, I reread my essay and found out that the essay was missing everything she mentioned. I made a promise to myself that on the next essay will be organized and the prompt will be read carefully.
I need to improve my ability to point out multiple complexities with a text, instead of sticking t one-sided arguments in my papers.   However, it is difficult to identify gaps in my knowledge, only because I need expand my literary analysis and writing skills.
