Abstract

This paper will describe the processes, procedures, assessments, monitoring, and decisions that need to be made in order to recruit and retain women in the law enforcement agencies. Discussion will also include different ways that agencies can advertise for female officers. Specifically the transition from traditional policing to community or problem-solving policing that reflects the capabilities of women law enforcement officers. It has been found that women are better at defusing confrontations and avoiding excessive physical force when dealing with the public. Although, women are not as physically strong as their male counterparts; their ability to communicate far outweighs those of the male law enforcement offices.

Reorganization of Recruitment Process

When law enforcement agencies transition from the traditional policing to a community or problem-solving policing it must first assess their commitment to change and be able to provide the community with the new mission statement, vision, and values. (Kasper, 2006). This is a task that takes time and patience; as this needs to reflect the agency as a whole and every employee of the agency must pursue the new culture that the agency has decided to take on. This is a project that will need a committee to submit ideas and brain-storm what words would best describe the agency in the new approach of policing, what types of advertising will be used, the photos and designs, the description of the organization, the types of officers and/or staff they have currently working and the new employees they will hire in the future. (Kasper, 2006).
