RESEARCH PAPER: OUTLINE
I. Television and radio are all censored in some way or form by the government but, the FCC has most of the control over what can and can’t be shown on television.
II. The formation of the FCC.
A. Formed in 1934.
B. Currently have 1,866 employees.
C. Created and empowered by congress.
D. All commissioners appointed by current president.
E. The current chairman is Julius Genochowski.
F. Annual FCC budget is 352.5 million.
G. One million of the budget is tax payer money.
III. Howard Stern.
A. Long running radio show
a. Broadcasted on WXRK in New York for 20 years.
b. CBS filed a lawsuit against Stern in 2004 for advertising Sirius satellite radio on air.
B. Switched from standard to satellite radio in 2006
a. Stern begins 5 year deal with Sirius radio with a 100 million dollar a year budget.
b. The contact ends on December 31, 2010 at midnight.
C. Awards.
a. Best male performance in a comedy or musical (1998).
b. AVN Award for special achievement (2000).
IV. Censorship on TV and radio.
A. Regularly receives FCC fines
a. In 2004 CBS was fined $550,000 for nudity during Janet Jacksons Super Bowl performance.
b. WSKQ FM a New York radio station was fined $16,000 for not telling callers they were on air when broadcasting calls.
c. Fox broadcasting company was fined 1.2 million for scenes of indecency on a reality show called “Married by Americaâ€.
B. All rules do not apply to every TV. And radio station.
a. FCC is not fully in charge of all media.
b. Seton Hall University’s pirate radio station is not only regulated by the FCC but the school itself.
c. Certain words and phrases can be said on the radio that cannot be televised.
d. Broadcasters that are in violation of the FCC may be stripped of broadcasting license.
