English essay – Explore what Luhrmann has done to the film Romeo and Juliet by using effects and why.
In the opening scene of "Romeo and Juliet" sound is used to create an effect on the audience. When the film starts images of the city of Verona are shown to loud opera music, this sound creates a tense atmosphere, it builds up suspicious and curiosity toward what this represents.
The opening scene of the film is set in a petrol station. The Montague boys and the Capulet boys happen to meet each other and a quarrel takes place this leads to a big gun battle. While this is taking action one of the Montague boys is hiding and being hit by a woman in a car showing both sides of this quarrel also to show humour. The techniques that Luhrmann uses are lighting, camera angles, setting and different aspects of mis en scene to create drama and excitement for the audience.
Act 2 scene 5 includes the most romance being reflected threw Romeo and Juliet’s actions and expressions. The use of an aquarium as a location for Romeo and Juliet to meet for the first time explains the meaning of their romance, In the aquarium the water is symbolized as Romeo and Juliet’s love to be clean as the water (so clean it is transparent).The bright fish that display beautifulness represents the different feelings that Romeo and Juliet feel at the understanding of love at first sight.
Later on in Act 2 scene 5 Romeo discovers that Juliet is a Capulet and Juliet discovers Romeo is a Montague. Baz Luhrmann uses camera angles and background atmosphere to represent this opposition, one of his main sources to show this is the stairs. Once you see Juliet at the top of the stairs you remember that the party and house Romeo is at is his worst enemies and because of this Romeo is at the bottom of the stairs crowded with people dancing at the background Baz Luhrmann has used a blurred atmosphere to describe confusion and misunderstanding.
