Mattie V. Rutherford Middle School is school number six out of 203 schools in Duval County, and many of its students are the second or third generation in their family to have attended the school. Although the community shares many characteristics with urban areas, it is located in Historic Springfield, Jacksonville, Florida. Mattie V. has implemented a school wide program, and enrolls 150- 200 students in grades 6-8. Ninety-three percent of students enrolled are eligible for free or reduced price lunches. Eighty percent of students at Mattie V. Rutherford are African American, five percent are Hispanic (many of whom are limited English proficient), and 15 percent are white. All students live within a two-mile radius of the school, and most live in two nearby low-income housing projects. Many parents do not read or write well themselves, although, the principal notes, they have high hopes for their children and want them to succeed in school.
Tiger Anchor Moving (Tam) is a model to get parents and student to back to the main campus, to become better involved.   Tiger Anchor Moving was themed after the school’s theme of Anchored with Excellence, Moving in TAM is to encourage the school and parent to Move together to improve parental involvement. This program will make it trouble free by providing transportation, food and incentives. TAM’s goals are to: Help parents feel comfortable to ask for help from the school, students and families to feel like the school is a community based anchor for academic support, assistance with problems. TAM’s mission is to provide uncomplicated enjoyable, social and educational services to the parent and students of Mattie. Rutherford Middle School.
TAM meeting will take place every Wednesday during the school year from 6-8 pm. TAM provides transportation for the parent and student from their front door to the school. We have ten brand new air...
