Student Self-Evaluation of Preparation for Learning
Becoming a nurse has been a lifelong dream and continues to be what my sights are set on. I have had a few detours along the way; to marry, have four children and, most recently, to take in my 89 year old uncle who is disabled. What those detours have taught me is that there is no “perfect time” to buckle down and do what it takes to achieve my dream. There are those who would call me foolish for taking on another daunting task, but those would be people who don’t know me and have not seen the passion with which I can attack a project once my mind has been made up. So, I am on my way and my first step has been to carefully consider, address and plan for the challenges and opportunities of the journey. I have been told that putting your goals in writing increases your chance of achieving them and mapping out a plan for success is what I have done here.
Study Strategies
How I study depends on what I am attempting to learn. If I am working on something that requires memorization, the repetition that flash cards offer works best for me. If it is a subject requiring a formula, such as mathematics, I understand better when I can see a problem and how the solution was reached. My ability to concentrate relies heavily on a quiet location. When it is time to study, I find a quiet, organized location and prepare to transform my “mom” brain into student mode. I often sit at the desk in the upstairs bonus room and other times I escape into my bedroom where I can close the door and focus on learning.  
The amount of time I am willing to devote to study will vary from semester to semester. Presently, I am taking only one class: Nursing 50. I am in class approximately four hours and 40 minutes a week and feel that I need an additional 60 to 90 minutes a day to dedicate to my studies outside of the classroom.
