Serenade No 10 “Gran Partita”

Serenade No. 10 “Gran Partita” is scored for thirteen instruments: 2 Oboes, 2 Bb Clarinets, 2 Basset Horns in F, 4 Horns in F, 2 Bassoons, and Contrabass (sometimes replaced with a Contrabassoon). The serenade is structured in seven movements, each having their own characteristics. The serenade can be considered another name or form of the divertimento. The original purpose of the divertimento is evident in its name. It was designed to divert the attention of an audience away from the scenery or set changes taking place on stage behind the curtain. This prevented the audience from becoming restless and noisy. The divertimento is a lighthearted and lightly orchestrated work that provided entertainment a musical backdrop to dinner parties or events taking place indoors or out. The serenade was developed as light background music for events again whether indoors or out.
This Mozart serenade opens with a fanfare and march-like Largo-Allegro Moderato movement. The largo is an introduction into the Allegro Moderato section of the movement. The first movement is structured in monothematic sonata form beginning with the Allegro Moderato. It opens in Bb Major and moves to F Major during the development and eventually returns to the tonic key during the recapitulation. The opening movement has a much more richly orchestrated sound to it, utilizing each of the instruments in the ensemble. The oboes and clarinets carry most of the solo passages during this movement.
The second movement is a minuet with two corresponding trio sections. The minuet is in Bb Major and employs each of the instruments in the ensemble. The first trio is in Eb Major but sounds to be scored only for the clarinets and basset horns. The second trio movement is in g minor, the relative minor of the tonic key. This trio heavily utilizes solo oboe, bassoon, and basset horn. After each trio, the movement restates the entire minuet portion of the movement.
