Beyond learning
As a recent immigrant to the country from Sierra Leone, I sometimes think that because I am from a completely different country that the rules and regulations would not be applicable. Because my country’s culture is very different from America’s. For example, many of America’s laws and social morals come from the bible, but in Sierra Leone our laws, codes and morals come from the Koran. Some rules are similar, but many also differ. Compared to my life in America, my life in Sierra Leone was stricter. Avoiding chastity and negative peer pressure will help me preserve my dignity, and make my parents understand that I value their advices and thoughts.
       
In Sierra Leone, my parents took moral education as important as your life and that one’s education is the main guiding light to your success. At that time I did not take them seriously, until one day, they sent me to a friendless village to learn the Koran. One rule I learned is the importance of chastity, which is to abstain from illicit sexual acts or impure sexual thoughts in any form. Their model was based on the written Koran that I learned from my days in the village. This section values the importance of marriage and abstinence.

Back home there was this girl whom her parent loved and adored so much that they would do anything necessary to help her get married because she was the only child they had. When they learned she was sleeping around with certain person and that person was not her husband, her parents kicked her out of the house and acknowledge to her that she would be lost for the rest of her life. Something like this gave me courage to listen and follow my parents’ advice because I do not want to disappoint my parents in any ways. When your parents put certain types of negativity on you back home referred to as “voodoo”, it usually going to come around to hunt you, and your life will be nothing but lost....
