Social Norms
Statement of the Problem:
I will be watching a movie at a local movie theater and receive a phone call and continue to have a conversion while others are watching the movie. This will challenge people normal view on what should happen when you receive a phone call in a place where it is not polite to carry on a phone conversion. The main violation of the norm I will try to break is making people uncomfortable by have a conversion during a time and place where they would not have a conversion.
Describe the Incidents:
I started by turning my cell phone up on the loudest ringer that I could find and then went to buy a movie ticket for the movie “National Treasures Two.” It was a 5:30 movie showing so I made sure that I would revive a call during the previews and the movie. The first phone call was received and I continued to tell the person on the other line that I was in a movie and I could not talk at that time. Then I hung up the phone and acted like it was no big deal. I was sitting with a friend who also acted like there was no problem with what had just happen. Before the real movie started I moved seats to better put my self between people. I had a row of people behind me and a row with just 3 people directly in front of where I was sitting. At one hour into the film I received the second call. Of course the ringer was still on the loudest volume. I then acted like I could not find the phone so that I would it would ring the full amount. I try to do everything I could think of to get people to take their attention off the movie. I then proceeded to answer the phone and carry on an 8 min. conversion about baseball. That was the only thing that I could think of while sitting in that movie. People acted exactly how I expected them to: not well! I had people ask nicely to end the conversion, I had people just stare like they want to kill me. But the best was an old couple which just got up and moved.
