Spirit in the Rainforest is an Eric Wilson book. This book is one of the many series by Eric Wilson which features Liz and Tom Austen, the main characters. This time detective Tom finds himself buried in the ground to protect a forest from being logged in Vancouver Island, Ucluelet, BC.
The owner of the island is a young, money-hungry woman named Vernya Anastasia Tosca married to another money-hungry rich man named Major Tosca. That night at the end of the protest Tom hears a voice of a girl, in the forest of Nearby Island screaming what seemed to be underwater ‘beware, beware’.
When he came across a girl whom he happened to be staying at on his vacation, Nikki, another protester, he asked her about the voice but she would not speak of it.
Later the next day, Tom is wandering through the little town with Nikki’s little sister, Bunni, who Tom is secretly in love with when they meet Mac a friend of Bunni’s family. Tom also tries to ask both Bunni and Mac about the voices in the forest but their lips are sealed too.
Since no one want to talk to him about the mysteries of the island Tom decides to learn more about it on his own. He goes to a local library. He discovers that Vernya used to have an all girls school. One night a student attending that school planned to commit suicide, she had even written down a letter. The next morning they found the girl drowned in a river nearby. Parents became worried of their children’s security and pulled them out of the school. Meanwhile Vernya was planning to sell the school to a big company but she couldn’t because parents where removing their kids fast. After the tragedy Vernya, gave up hope on the school and it became a deserted school, mostly because the students could now hear the voice of the girl everyday.
Later, Vernya and major learn that the court has ordered the logging to stop on the island. Without the logging the Tosca’s had no more money to pay back bank loans so they were forced to...
