Everybody’s body makes many drugs called hormones. One of the hormones that the body makes is called testosterone . This hormone helps people grow to be a certain size. Some people grow bigger than others because of this hormone. Boys usually grow bigger than girls because their body produces more of this hormone.

Scientists figured out that the best athletes have high amounts of testosterone that helped them grow to be big, fast and strong. They thought that if they could make these hormones in a laboratory they could then give them to the best athletes to make them even better. After many years of trying, they were able to do it. The lab made a drug called an “anabolic” steroid. (The word "anabolic" came from a Greek word that means to "build up.") Anabolic steroids make the body produce muscle.

Steroids come in many ways. You can be taken in a pill, in a drink or in a needle.

Some doctors use it to help people get healthier. People who don’t grow well, may need extra hormones. Other doctors give it to athletes so they could be even stronger than they were before. These steroids can be very dangerous.

Steroids are dangerous for two reasons: they are illegal, and they can damage a person's health, especially if a person takes too much of them for a long period of time. Steroids can produce very serious side effects in both males and females.

Steroids might:

Stop you from growing to your normal size
Damage your liver
Make your heart muscle to big
Make people moody and mean
Make people lose their hair
Make your muscles ache
Change how your voice sounds
Prevent you from having children
Give you a lot more pimples on your face
