Beowulf the epic poem, or Beowulf Director's cut. Both tell of courageous tales. Beowulf is about a brave hero who fights and defeats three mythical creatures, Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the Fire Dragon. The Director's cut on the other hand tells of a bit of a different tale once it reaches what is suppose to be the fight with Grendel's mother. It is obvious that the Director's cut more portrays a tragic hero. The Director's cut tells of Beowulf who slowly regrets each year that he slept with Grendel's mother and that this would come back to haunt him. The epic poem on the other hand tells of how Beowulf is perfect in every way and shows no flaws. Because Beowulf slept with Grendel's mother in the movie he can never hope to be the flawless warrior he was written out to be in the epic poem. It is clear that the Director's cut would be much more related to a tragic hero.
Furthermore, Beowulf director's cut shows a courageous man fall from grace. Throughout most of the movie, Beowulf regrets that he had spared Grendel's mother and then slept with her. Because he slept with her, he will be cursed to die at the hands of his own child one day. An example of this curse is how Hrothgar kills himself over the fact that he is Grendel's father and that in such he is responsible for all of the people Grendel has killed and because he slept with Grendel's mother. The storyline of the movie portrays a tragic hero while the poem doesn't at all.
Next, the poem on the other hand tells quit a different story when Beowulf confronts Grendel's mother. The poem tells the opposite of the movie, because it tells of a hero who is perfect in every way. The poem tries to make him perfect and not have any tragic things happen to him at all. An example of this is how he killed Grendel's mother without hesitation and died valiantly after killing the fire dragon. The poem tells an amazing story, but doesn't give Beowulf any flaws to make him a tragic hero.
