Saddam Hussein which in Arabic means “one who confronts†was born on April 28, 1937 to his father Hussein Al-Majeed, who died during his wife’s pregnancy shortly before the birth of his son, and to his mother Sabha Talfah Al-Tikriti. He was birthed inside a mud hut near the small village of Al-Ouja about 5 Miles from city of Tikrit, a small Iraqi city about 100 miles north of Baghdad. He went from being a poverty stricken Iraqi boy to eventually, after becoming politically active at the age of 19, would go on to rise through the ranks of the revolutionary Ba’ath Party and become one of the most influential rulers the Middle East has ever seen. Shortly after Saddam was born his mother Sabha, suffering from depression, did not wish to take care of him and his care was then given to his mother’s brother Khayrallah Talfah Msallat. Saddam spent most of his early childhood under the care of his uncle until he was re-united with his mother at the age of three, who by that time had re-married a distant relative named Hajj Ibrahim Hasan, who would became Saddam’s abusive step father. Saddam was unable to read and write until the age of ten when a visit from a cousin who knew how to read and write inspired him to become educated. He then confronted his family about his wish to get an education only to be turned down. Determined to get an education Saddam decided to flee his village in the middle of the night so that he could go stay with his uncle Khayrallah in Tikrit. It is here where young Saddam would learn to read, write, and start to develop his political ideology. (Post)
