Week 1: Assignment Supporting a Position Thinking Critically
“An Eye for an Eye Blinds Everyone”
My position on capital punishment is that I am against it. The thought that some one would commit heinous crimes such as murder angers me. However, I am pro- life, and I am against the death penalty. I believe that it is morally wrong to take another person’s life. I know that there are probably 20 or more executions a year. It doesn’t make sense that we should execute someone because they killed another.
I know there many abortions a year. But I don’t know which is a worse, someone that murders or someone that aborts an innocent child’s life. Nevertheless, the death penalty angers me. I can’t believe that as a citizen I should have to support this through my tax dollars; because my tax dollars are used to pay the cost. I also understand that either way, my tax dollars will be used pay if the person is convicted and has to spend their entire life in jail. Seemingly, life in prison is more expensive than executing inmate; because of the costs of legal process and salaries for the judge, prosecutors. Capital punishment remains a contentious issue, even where its use is limited to punishment of only the most serious crimes.
Although people say that they believe the death penalty is just, I really don’t agree with this position. As a Christian, I can’t believe that a Christian nation would really embrace this position. Ironically, the Old Testament does support the death penalty; “an eye for an eye” is quoted several times in the Old Testament. But then, we are really trying to live everything literally that the bible states, or just when it suites our case?
Maybe there are just bad people in society who will commit heinous crimes no matter what. Maybe people...
