Tattoos and discrimination

Argument Against Tattoos/Body Piercing

The premise of my argument is to look at the long-term effects of:
• The physical aspects of getting a tattoo/body piercing
• Decision to get a tattoo/body piercing
You should know:
Tattoos/disadvantages:
• Over 90% of people with tattoos regret having them sometime in the future
• 5% regret having them immediately
• More than 60% find tattoos unattractive
• Being tattooed is painful and expensive
• Removing tattoos is even more painful and expensive
• UV Tattoos – can only be seen under “black light”
o Many times more expensive
o Causes dermatitis
o Linked to carcinogens and allergens
Body Piercing/disadvantages:
• Swollen tongues, excessive bleeding, infections, swallowing jewelry parts
• Most common problem – ripped skin from jewelry catching on clothing or being pulled off
• Can lead to Hepatitis C – Cirrhosis of liver (#1 reason for transplants)
• After removal can cause skin dimpling and keloids (scar tissue)
You should think about:
• Past the next few years
o Pier pressure – “fitting in”
o “Fashion/Fads” constantly changing
• Employment opportunities
o “First impressions” and discrimination
o Possible Executive Chef for White House or Compass Group
• Marriage/Family
o Your future spouse could be part of that “60%”
o What will your children think?
In Closing:
• What is more important is the issue of decision-making
• Decisions made now will impact the rest of your life
• Must carefully weigh every decision made, especially when it comes to something as permanent and “visible” as a tattoo/body piercing
• When young you feel invincible and believe you have the luxury of “time”
o Time has a way of slipping away from you – fast!
o Some mistakes you will not be able to erase!
• If you are currently deciding on whether or not to get a tattoo/body piercing, ask yourself this:
o What will my tattoo look like in...
