The Book Report of A Tale of Two Cities
This novel is one of the famous masterpieces of Charles Dickens. Under the real background of French Revolution, the author combined three different stories, which are about a miscarriage of justice, love and revenge. Although the characters and the main plot were imaginary, but this novel deeply revealed the social conflict before French Revolution, strongly criticized French nobles’ cruelty and sympathized the poor people’s bitterness.
The most impressive part in the novel is Carton’s love to Lucie. Although it happened in incident but lasted forever. It tells us what is love. "For you, for the ones you love, I will do anything. If I need to sacrifice myself at any point in my life, I will sacrifice myself for you and the ones you love." Carton gave us the answer about love in the novel and he gave everyone a strong belief about love, which one ought to have.
But Carton’s death left me a deep impression. Carton’s love to Lucie was so firm and powerful that it gave Lucie a beautiful future. In order to help his lover, Carton accepted the death, which he did not deserve. When he walked on the guillotine calmly, the tragedy had a hopeful ending. His love saved not only a life but also lightened his indifferent life.
Lucie was blessed. She not only possessed her father’s love, her husband’s love, her servant’s love but also Carton’s unique love. Carton loved her but he did not want any repayment. When Lucie was fine, he only blessed her silently. When Lucie was in trouble, he came to her side to help her, even went to the guillotine. If his lover could live a happy life, Carton was willing to lose everything, including life. So Lucie was blessed.
