The Pursuit of Happyness



Everyone has an image of an impoverished person. Everyone has seen a poor person whether it be on TV, internet, or in real life we think we would recognize someone is poor if we saw them. Oddly enough the typical rum drinking unshaven dirty old man isn't nearly as typical as many would think. The poor dress like us, and try to live like us, the only difference is they're trying to survive and we're trying to thrive.

What we Americans see as poverty is complete and total destitution. When one has absolutely nothing for trade, when one can't support his or her family or themselves. What our government see's as poverty is entirely different. The homeless have their own homes, the malnourished can find and afford food. The poor can survive, and they can even support drinking habits and television along with these things.

Outside of the United States other countries such as Somalia, or Haiti know what it truly means to be poor. Without food, clothing, homes, and jobs they have no chance at a successful life where they are. Overseas it seems almost primal what these people suffer. There is no law in some areas, and those born into poverty have a high chance of death by the hand of the rich.

People look down on the poor and say, why can't they just get a real job, and why can't they just move somewhere else. Simply put, they can't. The poor are the hardest working people on the planet where as the rich usually don't have to worry about too much. Like in the movie, Chris did whatever necessary to survive with his son, even sleeping in a bathroom.

To some foreigners, living in poverty in America may actually be like living a dream. The poor here are helped by the government, and various other private organizations at no cost. What we consider the American dream is completely different in other nations. Here it is the pursuit of wealth, a family, and happiness.
