The films “The Thin Red Line†and “Full Metal Jacket†each attempt to show the “fear†in war. The “Thin Red Line†refers to the fine line between a man’s sanity and insanity. Both films use a different approach to create these images of fear, insanity, and hell. This paper will include an analysis between the cinematography, musical score, and how character relationships reflect inner themes. Also, the overall theme of “fear†will be correlated throughout the paper.
“The Thin Red Line†is a fictional tale about the United States battle against the Japanese at Guadal Canal. The film opens with images of nature and then proceeds to a Melanesian village where Private Witt is AWOL from his unit. The men of C Company are then brought to reinforce troops in attempt to take a hill for strategic advantage. While the men are being transported to the beaches they reflect over their lives and fear their possible fate. The men safely reach the hill that is being held by Japanese military and consider themselves lucky to have reached this far. As the men try to charge up the hill they are pounded with enemy turret fire and end up being pinned down. Captain Staros is ordered to continue with a full frontal assault, even though it is certain suicide. Capt. Staros refuses to obey his commanding officer and proceeds to execute a risky flanking maneuver. After the hill is secured Capt. Staros is removed from his duties for not following direct orders. The unit is then sent on another mission further into the center of the island. Witt and two other soldiers find themselves out numbered on a recon assignment and are forced to split up. Witt decides to distract the enemy but ends up being surrounded and soon shot. As the movie draws to a close, C Company is given another ranking officer and they re-board the naval transport boats to exit the island.(Malick)
