Watergate Scandal
During the 1970s a break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex was committed. The effects of this scandal let directly to the resignation of the President of the United States, Richard Nixon on August 9th 1974. He was the first president to resign from a presidency. The scandal began with the arrest of five men, the men who broke and entered into Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The robbers had a account that they got payed through by a slush fund used by the 1972 Committee to re-elect the president and the FBI found all the connections running to it. Nixon wanted all of his phones to be tapped and all the rooms and important lines to also be tapped, but he never would think that it would run back to him, this was a great help to find out what happened. Recordings from these tapes implicated the president, revealing that he tried to cover up the break in. Several court dates were set and several debates the US Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over all the tapes and he complied. To get more in-depth he scandal all started when a security guard on staff saw that a piece of tape was on one of the doors. It was the fact of where this door led to was the main reason it was further investigated. No one knew why Nixon along with the republican party would do something to this extent. The idea was to screw up the democratic candidates and some of the ideas were to harass the candidates and to create negative campaign adds. The were several mistakes made in the process of the Watergate break-in. G. Gordon Liddy was the man who was given the $83,000 from Nixons CREEP account. The money was for the equipment needed for the break-in.   All of the equipment was very high end and large purchase of equipment like that can be easily traced.
