A View From The Bridge   Essay Plan: Justice and Law in the Play.

Introduction

• Justice and Law greatly emphasised
• Character that influence role of Justice: Alfieri, Eddie and Marco.
• Explore how different characters’ ideas of justice are affected, and how each believes his idea of justice to be just.

Main Body Paragraphs

1.     Alfieri
• State role of character: Narrator, tells us story and introduces characters. Comments of behaviours of characters. Alfieri opens the play – signifies his importance. Speaks directly to audience, link between play and audience. Controls the play to an extent.
• In opening speech he established that “Justice is important here”.
( “A lawyer means the law” )
• Alfieri believes it best “settle for half” because written law may not act in favour of justice, but he believes it is better to accept these laws than to take them into own hands.
• He values law more because he sees that taking law’s matters into own hands leads to conflict and sometime death.

2. Vinny Bolzano

• Vinny “snitched to the immigration”.
• Many thought he was “crazy” and his punishment just.
• Foreshadowing.
• Eddie feels it treachery to “snitch”, but later on he is very tempted to do so about Marco and Rodolpho.


3. Eddie and Marco

• Both let desires/personal feelings affect their idea of justice: leads to conflict. Both of them are not strong enough to take an objective view.
• Alfieri warns Eddie about how his feeling for Catherine are “unnatural” and that he has “no recourse in the law”. This angers Eddie because of his feelings for Catherine which leads to him blaming Rodolpho and calling him a “thief”.
- “He’s stealing from me” says Eddie.
• Eddie calls the immigration – emphasis on how Eddie has no fixed principle for justice. His feelings seem to dictate what he think is ‘just’.
