By the 1920’s women’s roles had changed from being passive to active. Groups such as the NAWSA (National American Woman Suffrage Association) did much campaigning, displaying the disgraceful way they were being treated, which ultimately strained Congress to deal with the issue. President Wilson, finally declared himself in favor of woman’s suffrage and the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified on August 26th 1920. Women were becoming more than just the “typical” housewife, taking care of children and doing housework. They began to venture into new fields of work and attend universities. The employment pattern was starting to see change and women were becoming increasingly important to a society that once looked down upon them.
At this time of change, social scientists did much investigating into this “new” era for women to find out if indeed women were redefining themselves. Many of these investigations involved new roles for women inside and outside the home. These observations showed both positive and negative effects of the working mother. Gwendolyn Hughes writes (referring to the working mother), “By some sincere observers she is regarded as a menace to the race and held accountable for the falling birthrate, declining parental responsibility and decadence in home and family life.” This shows that not everyone in society is liberated on the idea of women stepping out of traditional roles. In fact many of the articles appeared to be adjacent to this view of putting down the working mother because of the notion they are becoming less family oriented.
There is not doubt that women were becoming increasingly independent, redefining themselves and the way they would live their lives. However, completely abandoning traditional values for some may have been the wrong approach with reference to many of the social scientist articles.
