What is the Cause of Obesity in America?
The disease we will discuss in this paper is obesity. Obesity appears to be a growing health issue among all age groups. While some obesity can be caused by other conditions most is caused by over eating and lack of exercise. Furthermore being overweight can cause many other health problems which we will address during this paper. However, by the end of this paper maybe we will be challenged to watch what we eat and strive to exercise daily.
Carmona (2003) stated that in America obesity is the fastest-growing cause of death and disease. However, we need to remember that Carmona was referring to the obesity problem in 2003; therefore, we can conclude that the problem has gotten worse over the past six years. Furthermore Carmona (2003) went on to state that childhood obesity is an epidemic. However, Carmona did not stop with that statement he went on to say that in the year 2003 “more than 300,000 Americans will die from illnesses related to overweight and obesity†(Carmona, 2003).
First we are going to go over childhood obesity. The Mayo Foundation (2009) pointed out that childhood obesity is a serious medical condition; however, every physician would probably say the same about childhood obesity. Furthermore the Mayo Foundation (2009) stated that because of childhood obesity medical problems such as diabetes which at one time mainly affected adults now affects our children.
What causes childhood obesity? While there are some cases where genetics or hormone problems cause childhood obesity; however, most causes of childhood obesity are from over eating and lack of physical exercise (Mayo Foundation, 2009). We are now living the era of electronics and our children would rather sit around playing video games or be on the computer rather than go outside to play.
