It is inconceivable to imagine how a mother could intentionally inflict pain and suffering
onto her own flesh and blood. How? Why? Is she evil or is she crazy? There is no rational
answer or logical reasoning. But, there is a name for this disorder. It is called Munchausen
syndrome by proxy (MSBP).
Munchausen syndrome by proxy, is a disorder or mental illness, wherein an individual
will fake or exaggerate an illness or injury about a person for whom they are caring. The victims
are, in most cases, their own children. Persons suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy
will deliberately inflict pain and injury on to their victims. This is usually a gradual process that
starts in early childhood, but not always. In many cases the parent is willing to have them
undergo painful tests and observations, and even risky or unnecessary surgeries. They do not do
these things out of anger at their children. Nor do they do it for financial gain, but rather to attain
the sympathy and attention they so desire (Clevelandclinic.org).
The name Munchausen comes from an 18th century German officer who was known for
telling fictitious stories about his life and conquests (Feurtado). The term “by proxy” means,
“one person acting for another” (Merriam-Webster). This disorder is most definitely considered  
to be child abuse. Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a relatively new form of child abuse,
although it most certainly occurred in the past, it was not acknowledged until recently
(Eminson 413).
Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a deadly disorder and parents of “regularly” ill
children should be closely watched by pediatricians and doctors, alike. The failure to recognize
the signs and symptoms of the disorder have led to the deaths of nine percent of children, who
are suffering at the hands of their own parent...
