I think that William Shakespeare wanted the characters of “Romeo and Juliet†to share the blame between them. I feel this because each of the main characters can be held morally responsible in at least one way.
I will start with the two families. I believe they are to blame because their attitude of hatred was to blame for many of the deaths, as if they weren’t “at war†then the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet, wouldn’t have got married in secret. This resulted in members of the families prolonging the feud, such as Tybalt Capulet, Juliet’s cousin and Romeo’s rival. He started a fight which ended up with Romeo getting banished. It was Tybalt more than anyone else who kept the hatred alive between the two families, because of his liking for violence.
I also blame Lord and Lady Capulet, Juliet’s parents because they should have been more concerned and respected her wishes when she refused to marry Paris. When she first refused, they threatened to throw her out on to the streets, an act of bare horridness. Lord Capulet is also at fault, as he did not remove Romeo from the party, even though he was made aware of his presence. This resulted in Romeo and Juliet meeting. Lady Capulet also put Juliet in the care of the nurse, who raised her as if she were her own. I feel that the nurse was also partially responsible for the death of Juliet. I think this for the reason that she should have considered that Juliet may not have been ready for such a massive step in her life. The Nurse encouraged Juliet in her romance with Romeo, as she carried secret messages between the couple, and allowed them to see each other.
I also feel that Friar Lawrence, the person who married the young lovers, could be held accountable, since Romeo and Juliet were just children, who married so soon after they first met, and at such a young age. This made them unable to make their own decisions. The main reason that the Friar decided to marry the two “star-crossed loversâ€...
