What is a ‘liberal arts’ education?

In a world that is forever growing and progressing it is a necessity to prepare the future work force for the new work place they will enter. In a workplace where the internet, instant messaging and cell phones are considered essential in everyday tasks it is difficult to remember how business and employers succeeded before. A report by the department of labor suggests that 80% of children who are now attending kindergarten will be employed in position that do not exist at present. Nolan (2007) A liberal education is a way to prepare today’s students of the new workplace that awaits them.
To be successful in many fields of employment it is necessary to be able to “think outside the box”, a liberal arts education not only allows this but promotes this progressive thinking. In today’s uncertain job market it is essential to be able to adapt and grow, as technologies and positions progress with the future.
A general definition of a liberal arts education is a form of studying that allows adaption and flexibility, therefore allowing a successful transition in a workplace that is subject to change over time. A liberal arts education may focus on critical thinking, problem solving, communication and gathering knowledge from different and possibly unconventional areas.
Baenninger (2005) believes that learning in liberal arts can provide experiences and values that transcend traditional education and be continuously helpful in uniting people of varying cultures, spirituality and intellect.
Washburn University was not my initial choice of school upon my arrival in the United States; the location was the main factor in my attendance. Since my enrolment I have taken a variety of subjects that are completely new to me, and have found myself enjoying and learning enough for me to consider different directions in my future career.
