Why Some Elderly People Should Not Drive
Has there ever been an incident that that someone was run off the road by an elderly driver? Or maybe they have been stuck behind someone going fifteen miles an hour under the posted speed limit. It can be sometimes aggravating and very stressful driving around a lot of elderly drivers. They can be slow or even un-responsive to their surroundings, thus becoming a danger to others using the roads. If driving at night or in darker places, some elderly drivers can hardly stay on the roads. This is dangerous for pedestrians walking on the sidewalk. If a child ran out in the road chasing a ball, would an elderly driver have the reflexes to stop in time, or would they even see the child? As one grows older, their response time slows down and their alertness lessens. They also, in some cases, lose their ability to see good, resulting in many accidents. So what should be done about older drivers? There should be a mandatory driving test given to drivers over the age of fifty and should it be given every ten years to ensure that the roads remain safe. Some elderly drivers are unsafe to other drivers or anyone else using the roads and also to pedestrians walking on the sidewalks or children playing near the street.
Today, there are many more drivers on the roads, compared to fifty or sixty years ago when most elderly people started driving. Society has changed dramatically since 1940 and there are many things that the old people may not be used to. This can cause problems or accidents on the roads because they may not be used to this many cars driving around them. They also may not be used to some of the laws such as the speed limit, stop signs, or traffic signals. Many older people drive way under the speed limit, thus causing traffic buildups or multiple car accidents.
