Why was the Treaty of Versailles hated in Germany?
With over 1 million innocent soldiers dead, a massive debt of over £6600 million and the shame of losing the war- Germany 1918 was not a happy place. It had been ruled by a cruel and unpredictable dictator Kaiser Wilhelm and been plunged into a long and deadly war. However when the Allies assembled in 1919 Germanys problems were going to get a lot worse after they drafted 14 points- known as the Treaty of Versailles.
To understand the Treaty of Versailles- we need to understand the events prior to it being written. War had been declared in 1914 and after years of “stalemate”-a term that means when a war is not being won by either side the German people began celebrating when the war was finally going their way. They German soldiers started to make breakthroughs along the Western Front with the Ludendorff Offensive, and German soldiers quickly advanced through Belgium and Northern France. The German Government encouraged German people to believe that they would win the war. However the war took a dramatic turn when the USA entered in 1917 and supplied the Allies with fresh troops and weaponry compared to the German troops who were poorly supplied after the British had blocked there ports. In June 1918 the Ludendorff offensive slowed down, before finally stopping to a halt. After the allies finally counter attacked in August 1918 the German army had little strength to resist. After a matter of weeks the Allies recaptured all the land the Germans had taken in the last 12 weeks. The change in the direction of the war was so quick that many Germans it was almost impossible to accept that they were losing the war. However it was clear that by November 1918 that Germany would have to make peace. The Allies offered it but on the condition that they got rid of the Kaiser.
