      The controversial clash between prohibition and the legalization of alcohol has been a topic of debate starting from the early 1920s to present day. Today, many American bureaucrats are deciding how teens are suppose to act; what they are able and unable to do, one being the age limit of consuming alcohol. After thorough research and readings of sources, I have concluded that teenage alcohol-related fatalities are still occuring with the federal drinking age, therefore the problem is still there and the drinking age should be lowered to the age Americans become responsible, 18. Although arguments to both sides are commensurate, I personally believe prohibiting alcohol to a high age limit may actually encourage teens to drink rather than preventing them.

      To begin with, during the early 1900’s, the “temperance movement” had a great influence on the prohibition era, that is to say, it had started the prohibition.   A temperance movement is a social movement where a formed society is against the use of alcohol. These societies criticize alcoholism, promoting abstinence from drinking, and encouraging anti-alcohol laws.   “…temperance has been used to describe the total avoidance of drinking alcoholic beverages. Such total avoidance is the only recognized treatment of alcoholism…By the early 19th century excessive drinking was considered a sufficient social problem” (Britannica).   The United States Senate proposed the Eighteenth Amendment on December 18, 1917, and was ratified on January 16, 1919: “…the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited” This quote is the direct wording of the 18th amendment, I would like to point out that no where in the amendment does it state the consumption or drinking of...
